Paving in a Raccoon River Valley Trail Town
Asphalt paving in Dallas Center serves a small town that has started growing again. Dallas Center began in 1869 after the railroad was built, was named for Vice President George M. Dallas, and incorporated on March 22, 1880. It lies 20 miles west-northwest of Des Moines and 9 miles west of Grimes at 1,050 feet. The population was 1,595 in 2000, 1,623 in 2010 and 1,901 in 2020, a 17 percent gain in the last decade after years of little change.
Older and newer homes
Most homes in town are older, with driveways that have seen many winters. Newer homes on the edges are adding young driveways that need maintenance and occasional settlement repairs. We tell you which kind of work your driveway needs.
Trailhead traffic
The Raccoon River Valley Trail's 33.1-mile paved north loop was added in 2009 with Dallas Center as a trailhead, at 14th and Walnut. Trail users bring weekend traffic to town, and lots near the trailhead and in town see cars, bikes and walkers together.
Higher ground, flat lots
Dallas Center sits on higher ground than the river towns, but flat lots still hold water at the low end of a driveway. We set the grade so water drains off.
Schools
Dallas Center shares the Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District, with an elementary and middle grades in town. School lots are best done in summer.
Our approach
Site visit, written quote, and paving scheduled for warm, dry weather. If the work touches the street, we confirm the city's requirements.
Maintenance
Crack filling before winter and a sealcoat every few years go a long way.
Gravel and older drives
Some Dallas Center homes still have gravel drives or pads beside the garage. Converting them to asphalt cuts down on dust and ruts and makes winter shoveling easier. We use the existing gravel as part of the base where it is sound and add stone where it is thin.
Neighbor scheduling
In a town this size, grouping a few nearby jobs on the same day lowers costs. If neighbors need crack filling or sealing too, send the addresses together.
Parks
Mound Park and Memorial Park have courts, shelters and paths; small public lots and paths need the same care as driveways.
