Paving Where the Metro Meets Warren County
Asphalt paving in Norwalk sits at the line between suburb and countryside. Norwalk began as Pyra, with a post office in 1856, and incorporated in 1900. It grew from 6,884 residents in 2000 to 8,945 in 2010 and 12,799 in 2020, and the Census Bureau estimates 15,004 in 2025. Census figures show 82.5 percent of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $303,100. Norwalk sits just south of the Des Moines airport, mostly in Warren County.
Storms
Norwalk has seen extreme weather: more than 9 inches of rain fell in 24 hours on June 9-10, 2011, an unofficial Iowa record for a town, and an EF4 tornado struck on March 5, 2022. Heavy rain finds every low spot in a driveway, and storm cleanup equipment can crack pavement. Good drainage and solid edges matter here.
Warren County rural entrances
Homes outside Norwalk on county roads fall under Warren County's driveway ordinance, Chapter 19, one of the more detailed in the area. A new driveway with an address costs $100 to permit; widening an existing entrance costs $25. Residential entrances must be 16 to 24 feet wide. A culvert is required unless the ditch drains away, with an 18-inch minimum diameter. If the entrance is paved, the ordinance calls for at least 8 inches of asphalt for residential entrances, and paved entrances on gravel roads must stop 15 feet from the road edge. The permit is void if the entrance is not built within 180 days.
New homes
Driveways in Norwalk's newer subdivisions mostly need maintenance and settlement repairs. Lake Colchester in the Lakewood development and the golf course neighborhoods have sloped lots that need supported edges.
Our approach
We visit, measure and give you a written quote. For rural properties, we handle the county permit and build the entrance to the ordinance.
Lakewood and golf course neighborhoods
Norwalk's Lakewood development around Lake Colchester and the neighborhoods near Echo Valley, The Legacy and Warrior Run golf courses include sloped lots and longer driveways. On slopes we support edges, set the base to resist washout, and make sure runoff from heavy rains has a path off the pavement.
New subdivisions
With the population up roughly 43 percent from 2010 to 2020, many Norwalk driveways are new. Settlement repairs and early sealing are the most common needs.
